Armed with my mask and hand sanitiser I proceeded to Julia’s millinery lesson ready to show her the lining of my hat and the start of the binding which I had begun to add. The lining of the hat was not as straightforward as I first thought, in fact it was very difficult due to the restrictions of all of the embellishments that I had previously attached. After talking this through with Julia about the problems I had with adding the binding. Julia suggested that I used a thicker needle and plyers to help the needle go through so many layers on the bonnet. She also taught me a new stitch which meant the hand stitching on the outside couldn’t be seen, although this process was time consuming it was definitely worth it in the end.
In this session I also made my pattern with buckram fabric ready to sew together. Although, at this point I don’t think this will be completed for the hand in, It will definitely be something I will go back to and complete at a later date. In the afternoon session I completed the binding around the edge of the bonnet. This was very rewarding once it was finished. In discussion with Julia we both agreed to add a length of pink velvet ribbon around the rim of the inside binding, this fabric was a very popular choice in the Victorian era and also matched Alice’s colour theme.
